The Safest – and Most Dangerous – Areas in Greater Manchester: What the Latest Crime Data Reveals

How Greater Manchester’s Crime Figures Stack Up.

Greater Manchester remains one of the most dynamic regions in the UK, but alongside its growth and diversity comes a complex picture of crime and policing. Recent figures published from the Reach Data Unit reveal key insights into where crime is most – and least – prevalent across the area.

According to crime statistics for the year ending September 2024, over five million non-fraud crimes were recorded by police forces across England and Wales. Of these, 329,257 offences were recorded by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) – a notable figure that places Manchester fifth in the national crime rate rankings.

When measured by population size, Manchester saw 158 offences per 1,000 residents which equates to one recorded crime for every six people. This places it behind only Westminster, Camden, and Middlesbrough outside of London, painting a picture of high levels of recorded criminal activity in the city centre and surrounding areas.

Other Greater Manchester boroughs also appear high on the list:

  • Oldham: 115 (crimes per 1,000 residents)
  • Salford and Rochdale: 112 each
  • Bolton: 108
  • Wigan: 99
  • Bury: 98
  • Stockport: 81

In contrast, Trafford continues to be the safest borough, with a crime rate of 75 per 1,000 people (the equivalent of one crime per 13 residents) ranking it 157th in the national crime league table.

What Do These Figures Really Mean?

While such statistics can seem stark, they should be viewed in context. Urban centres like Manchester naturally attract higher footfall, nightlife, and commercial activity, all of which can influence reported crime rates.

Moreover, increased police activity and proactive operations can lead to a rise in recorded incidents without necessarily indicating a rise in actual criminal behaviour.

Indeed, GMP has reported an 8% reduction in overall crime in 2024 compared to the previous year, alongside a 5.6% increase in arrests. These improvements are partly attributed to initiatives like Operation Vulcan, a multi-agency task force targeting organised crime and counterfeit goods in areas such as Cheetham Hill.

Assistant Chief Constable Rick Jackson noted that GMP’s strategy has led to tangible progress, including over 67,000 arrests and 50,000 stop-and-searches throughout the year.

While these numbers suggest success in tackling crime, they also point to increased police engagement with the public, which can result in legal consequences for individuals who may require robust defence representation.
